Adding indicators to Metatrader 4

Love Trading Buy/Sell Arrow Signals? Try This!

Assuming you have both the MQ4 and EX4 parts of the indicator follow the instructions below and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Step By Step

1) Download the MQ4 and EX4 files into your C:\Program Files\MetaTrader 4\experts\indicators folder
2) Close your MetaTrader application (assuming it’s currently open … Ignore this if the application hasn’t been launched)
3) Launch your MetaTrader application
4) On the left hand side, look for the “Navigator” window
5) Under the “Common” tab, look into the “Custom Indicators” directory
6) Locate the indicator which you have just downloaded into the folder stated in Step 1
7) Drag (Click and drag) the indicator onto the chart

If you only have the first part of the indicator i.e on file you will most likely need to compile it.

1) Double-click on the icon of the mq4 file to open in MetaEditor
2) Find the indicator in the indicator folder on the right hand menu-click on it
3) You’ll see the source code in the upper window
5) Click the ‘Compile’ button in the toolbar
6) If all’s gone well, you should see ’successfully compiled, 0 errors’
7) Any errors will mean there is a problem with the coding. The indicator may still work but it depends. All official standard indicators will not have any errors. The errors usually come in custom indicators
8) You should now be able to add the indicator to a chart in the usual manner
9) If you have compiled the indicator and it still doesn’t show up in the custom indicators list then you may need to restart your platform

Any further problems feel free to ask.

    Hi Jason,

Wasn’t able to get the Hull indicator working, even though it compiled without errors. It shows in my indicator list on the chart, with period=30, timeframe=240, displacement=0, price=0. Colors are ok, and it’s set to show in the data window. Very odd situation, I’m always adding indicators, including custom made ones, and this is the only one that I haven’t been able to get working. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Glen

    Hi Glen,

That one is the multi time frame (MTF) version (incase you or others didn’t know). This will show a indicator say on 5 min chart but as if it was on a 30 min chart. Usually with MTF
charts you have to have the original indicator loaded too.

  3. Jason says:

If need be, let me know which version of Hull you are having trouble with and I will try it my end.

Jason, the indicator I downloaded was the one near the top of the list in the MetaTrader4 Indicators tab at the top of this page. There are others available on the net but I haven’t found anything close to the Sniper Hull indicator.

Just tried it again this AM and I was able to get it up on a 30 minute chart. It’s a little odd in that it shows stair-step changes rather than a smooth flowing curve. I’ll see if I can work with that. If I’m missing something here please point it out, many thanks.

    Glen

Hi when I try to down load any of the indicator I get a page of code.Do I copy and past it into the MT4 experts folder.I can load indcater that are in zip files ok.Im using widows xp fire fox. Thanks Michael

  7. Jason says:

seems very odd. You should be able to save the file as is. At worst you should be able to open the file and the code will open in MetaEditor at which point you can “save as” in the expert>indicator folder.

If there a particular file that is not working for you? I might be able to email it to you.

I have not heard of MT4 using zip files before to be honest.

  8. Michael says:

The file comes already opened on the fire fox page.I would appreciate it if you emailed it to me.I can not work it out.
    Regards Michael

  9. Michael says:

I can not either I could you please email it to me.
    Regards Michael

    Hi Jason,
I refer to yr comment on Mar 13th, 2010. Like Michael I too use firefox on windows vista business. Many of the downloads come with zip and I find it difficult at times to download these indicators. You seemed surprise at MT4 using zip files. What are you using and can you recommend a better filing system? Thanks.

  11. Jason says:

    Hi Bob

Mmmmmmmmm? Must be a firefox thing. What happens when to try to extract the zip folder? Do you get any individual files?

When I download metatrader indicators I just get the MQL4 file.

Will get someone else with firefox to do some testing for me and see if I can find a simple solution for you guys.

  12. Jason says:

I have had someone look at it in firefox and they could open it in metaeditor and thus you can save it in the correct location that way.

Does it not open in metaeditor Bob?

I downloaded the rangebar indicators,so can somebody tell me how to use them on charts? how to convert the simple bars into range bars with those indicators?

  14. Tony says:

I have downloaded MT4 Custom Pivots.
    When I switch it on the Daily chart, it shows pivot, S1 S2 S3 and R1 R2 R3,and M0 M1 M2 & M3. Am aware or S=Support & R=Resist. Can anyone tell me what are M0, M1, M2 & M3 & how do I used them in trading Spot Fx please?
    Many thanks

  15. martin says:

    @Tony,
i suppose, M0-M5 are the support/Resist value, between each of them, means, that price could possibly be S/R level too.
so, we need to eye on price around that value..
most of the time, i only watch the S/R value, means i ignore those M0-5 value most of the time..
try to back test and learn..
    thanks

thank you in advance for your help. pips4us

  17. Jason says:

MT4 files are not zipped. Is there a specific file you are talking about?

  20. JJ Johnson says:

    Hi Jason!

I’ve learned a lot, reading your comments; thanks from a newbie FX trader!

Running the Dorian-Ash Recursive Stop through the MT4 Editor, I get the error message as seen below (Cannot open the program file). Is there a fix for this error?

Your help is appreciated more than words can tell!!

    JJ Johnson

    ‘OrderReliable_V0_2_5.mqh’ – cannot open the program file C:\Program Files\Tadawulfx Trader 4\experts\indicators\Forex EA_Recursive Stop_Dorian-Ash.mq4 (10, 1)

  21. Jason says:

Can you email me the file at info@greattradingsystems.com and I can take a look.

  22. Leigh says:

Hi , please can you help ! I have saved some of the indicators to my desktop but they have saved as a html document, how do I get the mq4 file ?
    Thank you

  23. Jason says:

how do you mean? Are you sure they are not the mq4 file? Where are you saving them from?

If it is from this site you don’t need to right click save link destination as…you need to left click them until you get the file download page and then you will get asked to save or open the file. You should save to the experts>indictors folder of your MT4 platform..

  24. Graham says:

Hi there – nice site but I tried to download the Scalp Hedge Ind and nada…any clues? Also, any chance of adding a Smoothed Repulse Ind?

  25. GreatTradingSystems says:

I assume you mean you were looking for these specific indicators, as I can’t see them in the lists. I can try and find them elsewhere. Check back later maybe.

  26. DEAR ALL,
CAN ANYBODY PLS EXPLAIN ME ABOUT ZIGZAG INDICATOR…….I MEAN HOW TO USE THIS IN TRADING………………?????????????

    THANK YOU………………

  27. GreatTradingSystems says:

My opinion would be don’t use it trade. I have not met anyone that has ever used it to trade and made a profit from it. It obviously repaints to certain extent which make it difficult to use. I have watched it along side other indicators and to some extent it can confirm other signals but you would have to run it with other indies to see what I mean. Too hard to explain in writing.

Also, I know some use it to help mark their waves that they are counting. Alternatively you can use the historical highs and lows it marks (and filters out) as your support and resistance.

Do a google search and I am sure you find plenty of other people saying simlar things. It is one of those indicators that look too good to be true because it is.

  28. Louie says:

Solid article. This great information for anyone who is just getting started using MT4.
